Black frame, white marble
A dated bathroom in a Putney period house rebuilt around a walk-in shower behind a black-framed sliding door, with a black double basin and marble-effect porcelain throughout.

The project
Trading a bath for a better shower
The room had good proportions, a tall window and original cornicing, but it was furnished like a different decade: a panelled bath, a pine vanity with a marble top and a free-standing brass towel rail.
The clients showered every day and almost never used the bath, so the layout was working against them.
We stripped the room to its shell and rebuilt it around a generous walk-in shower in the recess where the bath used to sit, with the vanity moved to the long wall.
Marble-effect porcelain runs across the floor and walls, a dark slate-effect tray grounds the shower and a black-framed sliding door gives the whole room a crisp, graphic edge.
Before
Understanding
the starting point
The original room had a timber-panelled bath, a pine vanity unit and a brass towel rail set against cream walls.

The brief
Crisp, bright and practical
The brief
The brief was a bright, easy-to-clean bathroom with a proper walk-in shower and space for two at the basin.
Design direction
We paired light marble-effect porcelain with black accents — the shower frame, the double basin and the tray — and kept everything else simple and white.
The plan
Every centimetre has a role
How the finished room is laid out. Sizes are approximate — every project starts with a measured survey and drawings.
- 1Walk-in shower
- 2Lit niche
- 3Double vanity
- 4Wall-hung WC
- 5Towel rail

The concept
Marble and black glass
A light, veined surface everywhere, with black used only where it gives the room structure.
The build
The detail behind the finish
From strip-out to the last silicone line, the room was rebuilt in three weeks of carefully sequenced work.

The result
A shower room that feels generous
The finished bathroom is light, calm and easy to keep clean, with the shower now the centre of the room.

Project summary
From a dated bathroom to a crisp shower room
The challenge
A dated layout built around a bath that was rarely used, with heavy timber furniture and tired finishes.
The shower was an afterthought in a room that deserved better.
The response
A full strip-out and rebuild with a walk-in shower in the old bath recess, marble-effect porcelain and black accents.
A double basin vanity and an LED mirror cabinet make mornings easier for two.
The result
A bright, practical bathroom built around how the clients actually use it.
Crisp black lines and light marble give the room a clean, contemporary character in a period house.
